Notes from offshore wind

Marine coordination is often described as air traffic control for offshore wind. That is a useful shorthand, but it undersells the job.

In offshore wind, real-time situational awareness is the difference between a coordinated site and a set of vessels operating in the same water.

An exclusion zone is only as good as the awareness of the vessels around it. Defining one is straightforward; making it work is not.

Offshore, weather is not background. It sets what can happen each day, and getting the forecast wrong is measured in vessel day rates or in near-misses.

Most offshore projects have more documentation than anyone can absorb. The problem is rarely too few procedures. It is procedures that do not match the work.

An IMCA inspection is not a formality. It is the difference between a vessel that is fit to work alongside a turbine and one that only looks it.
