London Array occupies roughly 100 square kilometres of the outer Thames Estuary, around 20 kilometres from the Kent coast. Its 175 turbines held the record as the world's largest offshore wind farm from commissioning until 2018.
The outer Thames Estuary is one of the busiest stretches of water in northern Europe. The site sits close to major shipping approaches to London and the Channel, with sandbanks, strong tidal streams and a seabed that constrains vessel routeing.
Coordinating construction and maintenance traffic in that environment, alongside commercial shipping that has priority and its own routeing obligations, is a demanding marine coordination problem.
