A 714 MW offshore wind farm 43 kilometres off the Suffolk coast in the
southern North Sea, and the first project delivered in the wider East Anglia
offshore wind zone.
East Anglia ONE is a 714 MW offshore wind farm in the southern North Sea, developed by ScottishPower Renewables, part of the Iberdrola group. It was the first project to be built in the East Anglia offshore wind zone. The project received planning consent in 2014, offshore construction began in 2018, and the wind farm was fully commissioned in 2020.
The site covers around 300 square kilometres and holds 102 Siemens Gamesa 7 MW turbines on jacket foundations. A single offshore substation, Andalucía II, collects the power and sends it ashore through two export cables of about 85 kilometres each. The cables make landfall at Bawdsey and continue underground for a further 37 kilometres to the grid connection at Bramford, near Ipswich. Day-to-day operations are run from a
dedicated operations and maintenance base at Hamilton Dock in Lowestoft.
The southern North Sea is shallow, tidal and heavily trafficked. Strong tidal streams and shifting sandbanks shape vessel routing and transfer windows. The approaches to Felixstowe and Harwich, two of the UK’s busiest ports, bring constant commercial shipping close to the construction and operations corridors. Winter storms and short daylight hours compress the working season, so marine activity has to be planned tightly around weather, tide and traffic to keep technicians working safely offshore.
